At Whittier Friends School our mission is to provide quality education for those children who can benefit from and contribute to a program committed to Friends' philosophy, principles and values, such as. . .

Peace
Simplicity
Equality
Integrity
Service
Community
Outreach

Your child is important to us. Our teachers care about the academic, social and emotional well-being of each child.

Small class size allows a close personal relationship to develop between the teacher and your child. We feel that the individual attention each child receives enhances scholastic success.

Academic achievement is evaluated using a standardized, nationally recognized test. We have found that, compared to the national average, our students usually perform at a level above their age group.

Belief in quiet meditation and that God exists in every person are the hallmarks of Quaker philosophy. We have a special reverence for life and feel a responsibility to treat all people with fairness and respect.

A Meeting for Worship is held weekly in the Meetinghouse Chapel. The children and staff sit in quiet meditation with the spirit of God. Guest speakers are invited to share insights from their lives.

The pride of accomplishment is emphasized here. We provide an atmosphere where each child learns at his or her own rate.

Computer instruction helps to prepare our young people for the future. The children get hands-on experience in preparing their own school newspaper, posters and class work.

Critical thinking is emphasized at Whittier Friends School. We were founded upon individualized instruction and hands-on learning. Our children develop critical thinking skills through discussion, use of manipulative materials, and frequent experimentation. We believe that the child's ability to think and solve problems is of vital importance.

Your child's program includes:

  • Complete academic instruction
  • Individually designed curriculum
  • Literature-based reading
  • Art, music, drama, P.E.
  • Regular field trips
  • Conflict resolution
  • Peace studies
  • Self-esteem building
  • Service projects to the community
  • Family participation

Established in 1974, Whittier Friends School is a non-profit school registered with the State of California and operated under the care of Whittier Monthly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends (First Friends Church).
