The Association -- What is It?

The Western Association of the Religious Society of Friends (WARSF) is a vehicle to provide a structure through which Friends Meetings, Churches, or individuals may enjoy a relationship with Friends United Meeting. It also permits those long associated with Friends United Meeting (FUM) to enjoy un unbroken, continuing relationship with FUM.

How is the Business of WARSF Conducted?

A Board of Oversight, consisting of not less than five nor more than thirty-five members is charged with the responsibility of overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Association. The Officers of the organization consist of a Convening Clerk, an Assistant Convening Clerk, a Chief Financial Officer, and a Recording Clerk. Annual meetings will be held to provide the entire membership with an opportunity to review the work of the Association, and to take any actions necessary for its continuing operation.

In What Way Do Members Participate in the Decisions of the Association?

All Meetings of Members are conducted in accordance with the traditional business practices of the Religious Society of Friends. Considerations, such as number of persons on the board, appointment of officers and directors, financial decision, etc., will be referred to the WARSF Meeting of Members for action and the action will be taken only after the Clerk has announced a sense of the meeting.

Who are Entitled to Become Members?

Initially, all active members of Whittier (California) Monthly Meeting enjoy full membership in the Association. Applications for membership will be received from any Friends Meeting(s) or any individual Friend(s) who have active connection with a Friends meeting.

What About By-Laws and Other Documents?

By-Laws have been created and approved by the membership, as well as Articles of Incorporation for non-profit status under the laws of the State of California.

Who Are The Officers And Directors?

Convening Clerk, Assistant Convening Clerk, Chief Financial Officer, Recording Clerk, and two members at large. One-third of the Board is appointed annually by the members for three-year terms.

How About Representation at Friends United Meeting?

One member of the Association is named as a Representative to the Friends United Meeting General Board. Three members of the Association are named as Representatives to Friends United Meeting.

How is Membership Attained?

When Friends Meetings, Churches, Worship Groups, or individuals wish to become participating members of the Association, and have familiarized themselves with the By-Laws, they may initiate the contact and submit an application to the Board of Oversight.
